Does ESTA Authorisation Guarantee Admission To The US?

In short, no. While an ESTA application maybe authorised by the government, it does not necessarily guarantee admission to the United States. However, it will grant you access to the boat or plane that you are boarding in order to get to the United States, as long as you also have a valid passport.

Who Is In Control Of Admission To The US?

When entering the United States, as with any other country around the world, you will meet passport control. The final decision in relation to the ESTA visa and a person’s entry to the country lies with the Customs and Border Protection Officers that deal with passport control. There have been some instances where they believe that a person is using the ESTA in an untoward manner and not for the purpose of a holiday or travel.

What Happens If My ESTA Isn’t Authorised?

If your ESTA application isn’t authorised that will generally mean that you haven’t met the requirements of the application. This can be for a number of reasons relating to your personal information, your recent travel history or your criminal record. If this hasn’t been authorised then you will need to apply for a traditional US Visa through a US embassy or consulate near to you. This is a much lengthier process, and will involve an interview with a relevant officer in order to determine whether or not you are eligible for authorisation. This is why it is important to obtain your ESTA visa as soon as possible, so you are not refused entry to the country in relation to your visa due to timeframes.
