New York is always worth a visit pretty much any time of the year, but in the autumn the city has a special kind of beauty. Slightly quieter after the summer tourists have gone, the Big Apple has something for everyone during the autumn months.
Here are some of the reasons why you should be considering New York for your autumn break:
During autumn, New York comes alive with festivals. It’s the time the city celebrates its rich selection of modern art, as well as theatre and design. There’s also New York Fashion Week during September and, just a month later, the New York Film Festival kicks off, showing the best independent films from around the world long before they reach the cinema. Finally, in November, the New York Comedy Festival gets underway, with everyone from local comedians to world famous ones performing in some of New York’s many comedy venues.
Although many associate the ice rink at Rockefeller Centre with Christmas, it actually opens in October, and, better still, the prices are available at a reduced rate during the first month. So, if you want to enjoy an iconic New York institution without the crowds and premium prices, it’s a good idea to pack your bags for a New York autumn getaway.
Outside of Manhattan, Brooklyn has some genuinely great flea markets that are well worth exploring. The amount of vendors usually increase after the summer, and, with the weather being more kind than you’re likely to find during the winter, you can seek out some fantastic finds in a pleasant environment. For the best flea markets, head to Williamsburg or Greenpoint.
Open House New York
Mid-October this year will see the 15th annual Open House New York event. Spread across five boroughs and over 200 sites, the event sees most of New York’s famous landmarks, museums and houses open up their doors for a variety of events including talks, tours and presentations. Previous years have seen tours of the East River take place, as well as a climb up the tallest cathedral in the world, so you can be sure that there will be plenty of special events taking place between October 14-15 this year.
